HAUDENOSAUNEE METIS
“……The Haudenosaunee Confederacy (People of the Longhouse), were an Iroquoian-speaking First Nation. They were also historically known as the Iroquois League or Six Nations. The confederacy was originally composed of five nations—the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca—united by the Peacemaker and Hiawatha, with the Tuscarora joining in the early 18th century, forming the Six Nations.
The Haudenosaunee developed a sophisticated political system based on the Great Law of Peace, a constitution believed to be one of the earliest participatory democracies in the world. They used wampum belts as mnemonic devices to record treaties and agreements, including the Two Row Wampum Treaty, which established a framework for peaceful coexistence with European settlers while affirming their sovereignty. The Haudenosaunee continue to maintain their cultural identity, language, and traditions, with efforts underway to revitalize their languages and reclaim their heritage…..”
Today the Haudenosaunee Metis are also gathering into kinship communities or clans with the descendant communities of other nations and claiming the heritage taken from them by colonial governments over the past 300 years.
