ANISHINAABEG METIS

“……The Anishinaabe were a group of culturally and linguistically related Indigenous peoples composed of the Ojibwe (including Saulteaux and Oji-Cree), Odawa, Potawatomi, Mississaugas, Nipissing, Algonquin, and other related nations. The term Anishinaabe means "Original people" or "first man," and it is also interpreted as "good humans" or "those who are on the right path given by the Creator".
Their society was organized around a clan system known as the dodem, with each clan represented by an animal, plant, or spiritual being, and responsible for specific roles in governance, spirituality, and social life.
The Anishinaabe are known for their spiritual beliefs rooted in animism, the idea that all things possess a spirit, and their connection to the natural world through ceremonies, dreams, and vision quests.
The Ojibwe were considered the "keepers of the faith," the Odawa the "keepers of trade," and the Potawatomi the "keepers of the fire". This alliance helped maintain peace and cooperation with neighboring nations and facilitated their role in the fur trade with European explorers, particularly the French……”
Today the Anishinaabe Metis are gathering into kinship communities or clans with the descendant communities of other nations and claiming the heritage taken from them by colonial governments over the past 300 years.
